AIM

Individuals working in a clinical setting are more at risk of exposure to hazardous substances and employers have a legal obligation to implement precautionary measures to control such risks and prevent occupational ill- health. Thousands of employees become ill due to work related exposure to hazards and costs industries and society millions of pounds per year.

The purpose of this module is to provide all individuals working in the health and social care setting guidance on how to protect and minimise the risks posed by hazardous materials within their current place of work.

OBJECTIVES

By the end of this module the learner should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the following:

  • The purpose and application of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (2002) (as amended in 2004)
  • The duties and responsibilities that are placed on employers under COSHH legislation
  • The roles and responsibilities the employee has under COSHH legislation
  • Identify hazardous substances in their workplace and their potential impact on health and well-being.
