INTRODUCTION

In the event of a fire outbreak in your place of work, are you familiar of the emergency procedures and actions that should be implemented to ensure you and others on the premises are out of the building quickly, efficiently and safely? Few people have first-hand experience of a serious fire; yet all appreciate the threat it presents and the terror it brings when an outbreak becomes uncontrollable.

Fire safety experts believe that with appropriate training, practical experience and basic knowledge and understanding. Learners are also expected to take part in practical training sessions in addition to this e-learning course and which include evacuation techniques and where appropriate, use of firefighting equipment.

Those staff involved in administrative roles such as receptionists and telephone operators, estates and

those working in environments such as operating theatres may need more specific training to fulfil their responsibilities in effective fire prevention and management.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

On completion of this Fire Safety Awareness module, participants should be able to:

a) Identify the three elements that need to be present to start a fire

b) Describe the characteristics of fire, smoke and toxic fumes

c) Identify the significant findings of relevant risk assessments.

d) Understand how to practice and promote fire prevention

e) Discuss the importance of fire safety and local fire safety protocols including individual responsibilities in the event of a fire incident.

f) Raise the fire alarm and take appropriate actions on hearing the fire alarm

g) Describe the right action to take if fire breaks out or smoke is detected.

h) Describe the different types of fire extinguish, identity what types of fire each extinguisher can be use on and discuss the safety precautions associated with their use

i) Understand the importance of being familiar with evacuation procedures and associated escape routes
